Vaginal discharge is a normal occurrence. There are special glands contained within the vagina as well as the cervix that create fluid in order to remove the old cells that are shed from the internal walls of the vagina. The discharge that is emitted from the vagina is the body's way of cleansing itself. It is also responsible for the health of the vagina.
The discharge that is emitted from the vagina is either clear in color or has a milky like appearance. The healthy discharge of the vagina usually does not have any foul smell associated with it.
As you experience the standard monthly menstrual cycle, you will notice changes in both the color and the overall thickness of the vaginal discharge that you experience. During ovulation, the discharge is typically thicker. Additionally, it experiences changes when sexually aroused and during the course of breastfeeding.
Changes That Could Indicate a Potential Problem
As a female, it is important to know and understand that there are changes that may occur with vaginal discharge that could indicate a potential problem. If you experience any of the following issues, it could indicate that it is time to see a doctor for evaluation:
- If you notice that you are experiencing a larger amount of vaginal discharge than is considered to be normal for you, you may want to consider getting an evaluation. It is important to understand that you will experience more when you are going through the natural cycle of ovulation, but if you experience a large amount of discharge on a regular basis, it is time for an appointment.
- If you find that the discharge that you are experiencing is not clear or a milky color, you may be experiencing a complication. Typically, vaginal discharge that is yellow, green, or even gray indicates a potential issue. These issues could be as serious as cancer of the reproductive system, potentially serious infections, and even signs of a sexually transmitted disease.
- If you experience vaginal discharge that has a foul odor, you may be suffering from a potentially serious complication associated with the vagina or the reproductive health in general.
- If you experience a change in the discharge that is emitted from the vagina and discover that you experience other symptoms such as irritation in and around the vagina, burning in and around the vagina, or find that you experience itchiness in and around the vagina, you could be suffering from a complication that medical professionals refer to as "vaginitis".
- If you have vaginal discharge that has small traces of blood visible in it, you could be experiencing an issue. This is especially true if you are not on your period.
As you can see, there are many changes that may occur when it comes to vaginal discharge. If you suffer from any of the issues listed here, be sure to make an appointment as soon as possible with a doctor that specializes in women's health.
