Most Common Types of Cancer According to the National Cancer Institute

By Anne Ahira

It has been established that there are well over one hundred different types of cancers that a person may become subjected to. However, the National Cancer Institute has recently released statistics on the most common types of cancer as far as the United States population is concerned.

The organization specifically focused on only cancer types that had at least thirty five thousand cases total. Cancers that had fewer cases associated with them were not included in this particular study. In this cancer guide, you will learn what the National Cancer Institute discovered in this study. You will also learn about some basic statistics that are directly related to cancer as a whole from the Annual Cancer Report conducted by the NCI.

Top Five Cancers

In evaluating the most common types of cancers, the organization discovered that skin cancer is the most prevalent. There have been less than one thousand deaths related to this cancer in the year of 2009, but well over one million individuals were diagnosed with this condition. Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer with an estimated death rate of over one hundred fifty nine thousand and over two hundred nineteen newly diagnosed cases.

The third and fourth most common types of cancer are breast cancer and prostate cancer. While men only suffer from prostate cancer, both males and females suffer from breast cancer. Breast cancer is more prevalent in women, of course, but it has been established that men are being diagnosed more often.

The Last Common Cancer Types

In evaluating the most common types of cancers, it was concluded that thyroid cancer came in as the absolute lowest. There were well over thirty seven thousand newly diagnosed cases in the year of 2009 in the United States, but less than seventeen hundred deaths. Just above thyroid cancer, statistically speaking, is endometrial cancer which affects women mostly in their childbearing years.

It was found that over forty two thousand women were diagnosed with this type of cancer in 2009. Amazingly, nearly eight thousand women died of this type of cancer that same year. The next type of cancer is pancreatic. It was established that nearly forty three thousand people were diagnosed with this, while over thirty five individuals died because of it.

Annual Cancer Report

In the Annual Cancer Report we see that the rates that are associated with the newly diagnosed as well as those associated with the deaths caused by cancer did, in fact, reduce drastically in the year from the previous years. The declines were seen in certain types of cancer, such as colorectal cancers and lung cancer.

In this particular report, it was established that men continue to receive higher diagnosis rates than females when it comes to developing cancers. Medical professionals and doctors are continuing to focus their efforts on developing techniques to reduce the numbers associated with the onset of cancer in patients, as well as developing strategies to determining why males are more prone to cancer than women.
