The Risks Involved When Consuming Alcoholic Beverages

Anyone who chooses to drink alcoholic beverages should be aware of the risks involved so that they have the ability to make the choices which will not lead to problems later on. There is no problem in consuming alcohol in moderation. 

Moderate consumption may actually have some health benefits such as preventing coronary heart disease. However, abusing alcohol by consuming it in excess all at one time or on a daily basis can lead to many health related issues and alcohol dependency which is also known as alcoholism.

One of the greatest risks involved when over indulging in alcohol is that when the user becomes highly intoxicated they are often times unaware of their level of intoxication which causes them to be impaired and still believe that can drive an automobile or operate machinery and equipment in a safe manner which often times leads to serious injury or in some cases even death. 

There are numerous health problems which can occur as well when consuming alcohol in high volumes especially over a long period of time such as liver disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer.

Alcohol consumption among pregnant women can increase the risk of birth defects and cause a condition which is known as "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" and can be responsible for things such as mental retardation, abnormal growth, and malformations of the skull and face.

Cirrhosis of the liver is also common among alcoholics which is a progressive disease that slowly destroys the liver by replacing healthy tissue with scar tissue causing the liver to malfunction. Individuals who should avoid consuming alcohol include anyone with a prevalent history of alcoholism or breast cancer in their family, or who as pancreatic or liver disease.  

Larger amounts of alcohol consumption has also been know to lead to strokes particularly ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes which cause a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. These are just a few of the risks associated with alcohol consumption which is why you should be cautious when drinking alcohol and only drink it in moderation.
