Latex in its natural form is a liquid which is produced by tropical rubber tree plants and utilized in the manufacturing of over forty thousand different products. One of the most common uses of latex is in the manufacturing of rubber gloves for the health care industry. It is estimated that latex allergies affect at least two percent of all individuals who are employed in the health care field.

Avoidance of Latex

There is no cure or treatment for the immune systems abnormal reaction to latex there are only medications which can be used to treat or reduce the symptoms of a latex allergy attack. Prevention of coming in contact with latex or latex based materials is the only way to avoid an allergic reaction.

There are many common items which contain latex materials and if you have a known latex allergy it is essential that you make yourself aware of these items by reading all manufacturer labels. Some of the most common items which include latex are rubber gloves, elastic bands, balloons, certain items of clothing, and household items such as bath or rubber mats.

Treatment for a Latex Allergy Attack

Should you come in contact with a latex material and your reaction is a mild one, there are over the counter and prescription medications such as antihistamines including topical creams which can help to alleviate symptoms such as the itchiness from a rash or hives.

If you should have a more severe reaction to a latex product such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, nausea or vomiting, it is essential that you seek emergency medical treatment as this can lead to anaphylaxis which is typically rare especially the first time someone has a reaction to latex, but is life threatening and can be fatal if not treated immediately.
