By Anne Ahira

If you live or work in a setting where you deal directly with HIV in children, it is important to learn what precautionary measures may be taken in order to prevent the transmission of the potentially deadly virus.

The first fact that you must keep in mind is that HIV is not transmitted to others by simply being around others, playing, attending school together, sharing items such as books, toys, and furniture, or by pets. While this virus has the potential to completely destroy the body of the sufferer and affect their overall lifespan, it is a virus that is relatively weak when it is not within the body.

Yes, it is important to ensure safe practices when dealing with HIV in children such as washing the hands frequently, keeping the area clean and sanitized, and other precautionary measures that work to successfully prevent viruses and various forms of bacterium from spreading.

However, you will not be taking these measures to prevent other adults and children from developing the HIV that is part of the child that has the virus. You will be taking these precautions to ensure that the illnesses that other adults and children that are around the HIV child may be carrying. Just a simple cold or stomach virus has the potential to affect children with HIV in a potentially serious manner.

When dealing with HIV in children, it is considered appropriate to ensure that you have a good first aid kit on hand. Accidents happen and many of these accidents such as a scrape on the knee, or another type of cut, could result in the exposure of blood.

You will need to ensure that you have protective gloves, bandages, and other cleansing agents such as Hydrogen Peroxide and alcohol on hand. This will allow you to limit the amount of blood that is exposed in accidents.

In addition to this, it is also important to ensure that the child takes their medication on a regular basis. Dealing with HIV in children may be disheartening, but it is quite possible if the proper precautions are taken.
