How to Cope with the Devastation of an HIV Diagnosis

By Anne Ahira

If you have recently received a positive HIV diagnosis, you are probably experiencing a wide array of emotions. This potentially fatal diagnosis has likely been quite devastating to you. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that literally wages war against the immune system, breaking down the natural defenses of the body one section at a time.

As the defenses are eliminated, you stand a higher chance of suffering from illnesses involving bacterium, fungi, and viral pathogens. Eventually, as the virus progresses, you will eventually suffer from a condition that is called AIDS. This stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Now that you know a little bit about the virus, it is time for you to learn how to cope with the devastation of an HIV diagnosis.

If you are dealing with an HIV diagnosis, it is important to understand that there are many emotions that will be experienced that are actually normal. You will experience sadness, fear, and possibly even anger. Do not allow yourself to repress these emotions. You should permit yourself to experience them to the fullest.

This is a type of trauma and you will go through a grieving process. While the grieving process is typically reserved to those that are suffering through the loss of a loved one, it can be experienced by anyone that experiences a loss. Once you learn that you are HIV positive, life as you know it changes. In a sense, you have suddenly lost yourself.

We all need a support system. If you have received an HIV diagnosis, it is important that you have some sort of support system. It may be difficult to determine who to tell. You do not have to release the information to everyone. As a matter of fact, it is often best to consult with a professional immediately after receiving the news.

Not only will the professional assist you in coping with your positive HIV test, they will assist you in telling others about your condition when the time comes. It may be challenging to cope with an HIV diagnosis, but it is not impossible.
