Controlling A Food Allergy And Treatments

By Anne Ahira

The reality when it comes to individuals who have food allergies is that there is no cure or treatment for the food allergy itself only medications which can be given to reduce or treat the symptoms of the allergic reaction.

While many individuals have what is known as food intolerance, only a small percentage of the population have what is known as an actual food allergy with the difference being that a food intolerance is a digestive problem and a food allergy involves the immune system which acts abnormally in treating certain foods as a foreign substance or threat to the body. These reactions can be mild to quite severe as well as life threatening or fatal.

Food Allergy-Avoidance

The number one recommended treatment when it comes to a food allergy is avoidance of the particular food or any foods which contain the substances which causes the allergic reaction.

It is essential that you check all food labels including those of beverages and condiments and when dining out always be sure ask how the food is prepared and never eat anything that you are not one hundred percent positive does not contain the allergen. It is also essential that you be prepared in case you accidently ingest a food containing the allergen by carrying an emergency kit with you that includes an "EpiPen" or "epinephrine. "

Treatments for an Allergic Reaction to Food

While there is no treatment or cure for a food allergy, there are over the counter medications which can help reduce or alleviate the symptoms of a mild allergy attack. These medications include antihistamines which come in liquid or pill form and will help in relieving the common symptoms associated with a food allergy which are typically hives and itching. In the case of a severe allergic reaction to food in which swelling can cause the airways to be blocked, emergency medical treatment is necessary.
