Cause Of Anorexia

Potential Causes of Anorexia Nervosa

By Anne Ahira

While there is no definitive cause of anorexia nervosa, experts believe it is most likely a combination of factors involved when someone develops this disorder. Society and culture definitely play a roll in many cases of anorexia as much of the media portrayal of the "perfect" body image is that of being attractive and thin, and many women attempt to meet these standards by extreme dieting measures. While ninety five percent of anorexics are female, some men are affected by this too with the same desires to have the "perfect" body image.

Genetic Factors and Brain Function May Play a Roll in Anorexia

Recent studies have indicated that there may be a genetic link to anorexia. Some researchers believe that an inherited gene or multiple genes may predispose an individual to develop anorexia nervosa.

Some studies suggest that a portion of the brain which controls part of the metabolism may malfunction which contributes to the development of anorexia. Other research has suggested that a chemical imbalance in the brain which controls the regulatory and signaling processes may also be part of the cause.

Personal Characteristics which may Cause Anorexia

Risk factors for developing anorexia also include a past history of under eating which may include infancy if there were feeding problems. Individuals who view themselves in a negative way as well as perfectionists are also considered to be at risk when it comes to developing anorexia.

Some people have the need for control and depriving themselves of food gives them that sense of control. There are also many cases in which no definitive cause can be found, however, finding the cause is not essential when it comes to treating anorexia, and treatment can be done successfully by focusing on the present and learning the skills needed to develop healthy eating habits.
