By Anne Ahira

Carpal tunnel is a debilitating health condition that has the potential to affect the quality of life that an individual has. If you are having any type of complication with your hands, it is important to learn how to identify the symptoms associated with carpal tunnel. Being able to detect this condition early increases the chance that treatment will be successful.

In this health guide, you will be introduced to the symptoms that are commonly experienced by those that suffer from this condition. Many may only have a few, subtle symptoms while others experience a large number of severe symptoms. By reading this, you will be able to determine if you are experiencing this syndrome firsthand.

Common Symptoms

There are common and advanced symptoms related to carpal tunnel syndrome. In the beginning stages of the condition, individuals most often start to experience sleep issues because they are experiencing pain and other uncomfortable sensations in the hands. Many complain of being able to sleep at night but then waking up periodically through the night due to the fact that they are experiencing pain in their wrist and/or their hand.

In many cases, the sufferer may also experience numbness and sensations that reflect that of burning and tingling as well. The following symptoms are also quite common among carpal tunnel patients:

  • Many experience weakness in the hand as well as the wrist. This is often due to the pressure on the median nerve which has the motor function of sending signals to move the muscles. It also has sensory capabilities, which is why pain and other types of discomfort are experienced.
  • Many will discover that the grip that they once experienced with their hands is weak once they develop this condition. It is common to drop everyday objects easily, such as pens and drinking glasses.
  • It is common for the hands to feel cold to the touch, while the arms remain warm. Though the feeling may be lost due to the pressure of the median nerve, many find that this cold feeling is highly uncomfortable.
  • Many individuals experience pain in the fingers. Then, there are others that experience pain all the way up into the forearm region. There are some sufferers that will experience pain in all areas, all at once.
  • It is quite common for many individuals to find that their hand is falling asleep on a regular basis. This is often due to lack of circulation or a high degree of poor circulation in the wrist.

Complications

When an individual experiences the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, they may experience many different complications. First, they may start to experience issues with sleeping through the night. This eventually leads to a general lack of productivity during the day. Many find that this interferes with their job. As a result, their earnings may start to drastically reduce. Many may find that their motor functions are drastically hindered.

They may find it difficult to tie their shoes, turn the key when in the ignition of their vehicle, and even do simple projects like apply makeup. If you experience any symptoms of carpal tunnel, it is important to see a doctor immediately. Early intervention is the key to lifelong success as far as recovery is concerned.
