The term "Brain Fever" was developed by a man whose name was Victor Frankenstein. This term is mostly used in literature that is identified as Victorian, but it seems to reflect a real medical condition. It basically involves the development of inflammation in the brain. As a result of the inflammation, a fever will develop.
In most instances, there are two specific medical conditions that directly impact the brain that are identified as those that result in brain fever. The first of these conditions is meningitis. The second condition is encephalitis. In this medical guide, you will learn about these two brain fever conditions.
Meningitis
The membranes that surround the brain region of the body are called Meninges. When these membranes experience a form of swelling and the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord as well as the brain becomes disrupted in one form, fashion, or another, this is referred to by medical professionals as meningitis. This typically comes as a result of an infection in the body.
The three most common symptoms associated with this condition is a headache that may be described as being moderate to severe, stiffness in the neck area, and even a fever. Infections of all types may contribute to this condition. These include fungal infections, as well as those that are considered to be bacterial and viral in nature. Other symptoms associated with this condition include the following:
- Many sufferers will experience nausea which may or may not be accompanied by vomiting.
- If an individual is suffering from this condition, they may show signs of struggling with cognitive tasks such as concentrating on tasks, conversations, and other situations. Many may even exhibit apparent cognitive challenges such as confusion.
- Many may start to experience seizures for the first time when they suffer from this brain fever condition.
- It is common for the sufferer to experience sensitivities to external stimuli, such as light.
- A skin rash my develop in the individual that suffers from this condition.
Encephalitis
When an individual experiences a viral based infection, it could result in the brain fever condition known as encephalitis. While this could prove to be a potentially life-threatening situation for many that experience it, this level of severity is actually quite rare overall. A person may suffer from a primary case or a secondary case.
Much like brain tumors, a primary infection originates in either the brain or the spinal cord. In a secondary case, the infection originates in another location of the body and moves into the brain area. The following represents the symptoms that are most commonly experienced when a person suffers from this brain fever condition:
- It is common in all cases for the sufferer to experience a headache that is relatively intense overall.
- Many experience personality and/or mood changes. Irritability and confusion are the two most common types of changes.
- Many will discover that they experience a general weakness in the muscles and this could result in tremors.
- There are many patients that will loss the feelings to a certain area of their body. They may experience paralysis in such instances.
- Vision complications such as blurry vision and vision that is double may also be experienced.
If you have any of the symptoms associated with a brain fever condition, you should seek medical care immediately.
