Bipolar Warning Signs of Suicidal Thoughts

It is estimated that up to twenty percent of all patients diagnosed with a bipolar disorder will commit suicide on an annual basis. It is also estimated that suicide accounts for one percent of all deaths on an annual basis in the United States alone. Statistic show that among individuals between the ages of fifteen and twenty four, suicide is the third leading cause of death and seventy three percent of suicides are committed by white males.

It is essential that if you or a loved one have any type of mental illness that you know the risk factors and warning signs of suicidal thoughts as it is possible to prevent a suicide by recognizing these warning signs and getting immediate professional help.

Symptoms of Suicidal Thoughts

Some of the symptoms of suicidal thoughts include when an individual frequently or consistently thinks or talks about death or dying, as well as when they express or show great sadness and have lost all interest in things which they used to enjoy including social activities.

They may talk about feelings of being worthless, helpless, or hopeless. Insomnia and eating disorders are also possible signs of these thoughts. An individual may even state the fact they he wants to commit suicide or go as far as calling family and friends to say goodbye and make or change a will.

Risk Factors for Suicidal Thoughts

Studies have shown that ninety percent of suicides are committed by individuals who have had some form of mental illness or clinical depression. Substance abuse is also common among people who commit suicide and it is typically a combination of this abuse and mental illness which causes this tragic result.

Any of these warning signs should be taken very seriously and particular attention should be paid to individuals who have attempted suicide in the past or suffer from any type of mental illness including bipolar disorder.
