By Anne Ahira

Over the last few decades, home remedies containing herbs and herbal supplements have gained in popularity as a form of alternative medicine because many individuals believe that it is possible to treat numerous diseases and illnesses naturally including mental illness.

While there is no harm in trying these dietary herbs or supplements as some may be very beneficial when it comes to the symptoms of this disorder, it is essential that you educate yourself of any potentially harmful interactions that can occur when taking these herbs and supplements with other medications. It is also essential that you consult with your doctor prior to trying any form of alternative medicine.

Supplements for the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Researchers believe that bipolar disorder is likely caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. One of these chemicals produced in the brain is serotonin which is believed to have an effect on numerous psychological functions such as mood, sexual desire, memory, learning, and social conduct. When the levels of serotonin become low, this can result in depression, anxiety, insomnia, and irritability.

Some studies have been done which show that "5-hydroxytryptophan" or "5-HTP" can increase the levels of serotonin and help with mild depression, regulate emotions and mood and is thought to be as effective as some antidepressants. "Dehydroepiandosteronent" or "DHEA" is a natural hormone produced by the body but decreases in production after the age of twenty and it is believed by some that DHEA supplements may also aid in alleviating the symptoms of depression.

Dietary Recommendations for Bipolar

While there is no special diet required for individuals with bipolar, a proper diet must be maintained as some individuals with bipolar disorder have a tendency to become overweight especially when taking certain medications for this illness.

Some researchers believe that fish oil which contains omega-3 fatty acids helps with part of the brain that controls behavioral functions and may help with the symptoms of depression in bipolar disorder. It is also recommended that people with bipolar disorder avoid caffeine, limit salt, and watch their fat intake.
