While bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness for which there is no cure and requires medical treatment, there are some studies which have been conducted that suggest some nutritional supplements may aid in decreasing some of the symptoms of this disease.
However, it is important to note that nutritional supplements are not medications or drugs and need no approval from the Food and Drug Administration therefore, these supplements should never be used to replace any current medications which have been prescribed and your doctor should be consulted before trying any of these supplements as they may cause serious side effects when interacting with other medications.
Vitamin Supplements for Bipolar
The B vitamins are thought to have a positive effect on mood as well as energy and strengthening the immune system. B vitamins work more effectively when taken in combination with each other along with folic acid and this is best accomplished by taking a B-complex supplement as these supplements provide the proper combination of these B vitamins which include the B-1, B-6, B-12 vitamin, as well as folic acid.
Vitamin E has been shown to help reduce seizures in some individuals, and when taking anticonvulsant medications for bipolar, it is recommended that a vitamin E supplement be taken because these medications can deplete the vitamin E in your system. However, precautions should be taken to monitor blood pressure when taking a vitamin E supplement- especially in individuals who have high blood pressure- as this can cause the blood pressure to rise significantly.
Amino Acids
Taurine is an amino acid thought to help reduce or prevent seizures and has shown some positive results in individuals who experience the "rapid cycling" symptom of bipolar disorder."GABA" or "gaba-amino butyric acid" is sold over-the-counter and can help with anxiety, insomnia, and nervous tension; however, these can have serious side effects with commonly prescribed medications for bipolar disorder and it is essential that anyone considering taking this supplement should consult with their physician before doing so.
Methionine is another amino acid which studies have shown help some individuals with depression, however, caution should be used when taking this supplement as this can also cause the symptoms of mania in some individuals with bipolar disorder.
