Anorexia Home Treatment

Anorexia Home Treatment Strategies

By Anne Ahira

Anorexia is a challenging and serious psychological and physiological medical condition that should be treated by both a medical doctor and a doctor that specializes in mental health conditions and/or eating disorders. Self diagnosis and self treatment is not at all advised.

However, if you or your loved one is suffering from this condition, it is important to understand that there are many steps that can be taken at home that will optimize the medical treatment that is pursued to overcome this condition. Many refer to these treatments as home treatments. If you engage in these strategies, it is important to ensure that you inform the doctor(s) that you are working with so that they may assist in developing goals, and customizing the treatment plan.

Eating Behavior Modification

The first anorexia home treatment is eating behavior modification. When it comes to eating, many individual that suffer from this eating disorder will experience moderate to severe anxiety. It is important to modify the behaviors that are associated with eating. First, the point that eating is safe and a necessary part of life should be understood.

It should be understood that eating slowly and focusing on the tastes and the nutrition is more productive than focusing on the guilt associated with eating. If stress is experienced while eating, a person battling with anorexia should be encouraged to eat with others and do other activities while eating, such as talking or listening to a low playing radio.

Enhancing Emotional Health

The next anorexia home treatment is simply to focus on enhancing emotional health. One of the most common traits that anorexics have with one another is poor self-esteem and a distorted self image. If the illness is being treated, it is important for the sufferer to focus on increasing their self-confidence levels.

Patients should be encouraged to think positive thoughts and should be given compliments that focus on specific aspects of their physical appearance so that they will come to enjoy who they are as a person. They should also be made to understand that this is an illness and the recovery process is likely going to be both challenging and possibly even take an extended amount of time.
