Steroid Nasal Sprays

The Functionality of Steroid Nasal Sprays Explained for Allergy Sufferers

By Anne Ahira

Many allergy suffers utilize steroid nasal sprays in order to alleviate the symptoms that they experience during a flare up. However, many sufferers simply do not understand the basic functionality of these medicated sprays. When an individual suffers from allergies, the nasal cavity and the blood vessels that make up the eyes often become swollen.

In addition to this, congestion and even itching is experienced. For the sufferer that experiences moderate to severe allergies, these symptoms may prove to be quite challenging. Many do not realize that there is a specific chemical based process that leads to these symptoms. Steroid nasal sprays assist in inhibiting this chemical based process.

Corticosteroids

Each steroid spray for the nose contains corticosteroids. These are nothing more than a man-made version of the following:

  • Prednisone
  • Cortisone
  • Hydrocortisone

These literally clone the steroids that the body typically produces on its own. There are special glands in the body that are located in close proximity of the kidneys. These are called adrenal glands. Typically, steroid production takes place in these glands.

However, for many, the creation of such steroids is difficult. This is when additional medications are used. In the case of allergy sufferers, steroid nasal sprays are effective in reducing the common inflammation that is experiences in the nasal cavity, the blood vessels, and other components of the body.

The Risks

While the risks associated with steroid nasal sprays are minimal, there are a few that patients should consider prior to taking the medication and over the course of treatment. The most serious is that the medication has the potential to increase the blood pressure of the person taking it. Immediately after this risk is the possibility of experiencing the thinning of the bones.

Irritation in the nasal cavity may be experienced; mood changes, sleep complications, reoccurring yeast infections, and even a sensation of burning in the nose may be experienced. If you are looking for relief from allergy symptoms, steroid nasal sprays are considered to be one of the most productive moves that you may make.
