By Anne Ahira

Over the years when it comes to the treatment of alcoholism and other dependencies, many varieties of psychotherapy which include forms of group therapy have been developed which have had very successful outcomes for the individuals receiving this type of treatment.

These treatments are designed in such as way as to match the individual needs of the patient including what resources are available to them in regards to financial status and insurance coverage.

There are many different types of group and psychotherapy which cover a broad range of methods used by therapists to help individuals overcome their alcohol and other addictions. One form is supportive psychotherapy which allows the addict to express their emotional feelings and problems that have occurred in their lives with a therapist who listens carefully and encourages them to share all of the issues that have troubled them throughout their lives.

Cognitive-Behavioral therapy is a therapy that helps the patient gain the skills to cope with specific problems such as, anxiety, depression, anger management, and how to maintain their sobriety.

A form of group therapy helps the individual develop the social skills needed to communicate in a healthy way with others and are done in group sessions with other addicts who are allowed to express their feelings and learn to deal with each other in a positive manner.

Exploratory psychotherapy is sometimes used with an individual who has a history of such things as abuse, violence, and other traumatic experiences in their lives. This type of therapy involves the patient recalling and discussing past traumatic issues in their lives to try and find what may be causing their negative behavior along with their usage of alcohol or drugs.

This treatment is not often recommended as it can be very traumatic for the individual especially if they have other severe emotional problems as well as their addiction which could lead them to become in a very fragile state.
