Alcoholic Psychological Emotional Effects

The Psychological and Emotional Effects of Alcoholism

By Anne Ahira

When it comes to the disease of alcoholism, many people tend to think more about and focus on just the physical aspects of this disease when in all actuality the psychological and emotional effects can be just as damaging as the health related issues.

Just as alcoholism itself is a progressive disease, so are the psychological effects that are attributed to it and the longer an individual continues to abuse alcohol his mental state also continues to deteriorate.  Alcohol is a depressant which slows down the activity of your brain and affects the central nervous system which leads to behaviors which an individual would not normally do when not intoxicated.

The alcoholic can become emotionally unstable and this manifests into many different types of mood swings and behaviors which can also cause them to alienate family and friends as their life is centered around their desire to consume alcohol.

They begin to exhibit many anti-social behaviors and discontinue doing activities which they would normally enjoy . It is not at all unusual for the individual to drastically withdraw from people and situations that they once were actively involved in. Many do this as they are attempting to keep their alcohol use a secret.

In most situations involving those that abuse alcohol, the individual will have the tendency to place the blame for their complications in life on other people or situations. When approached by loved ones, friends, or others they may become defensive and display outward signs of frustration. It is not at all unusual for the individual to experience high levels of anxiety, anger that is considered to be moderate to severe or even severe depression.

The alcohol addict will often use the substance in order to escape the reality that is occurring around them. Once they discover that they are unsuccessful, they will often continue using on a regular basis for a consistent "escape". If you know someone experiencing the psychological and emotional effects of alcoholism, it is important to display your support and encourage them to seek assistance.
