Getting Alcoholism Treatment for Yourself or a Loved One

Alcoholism is a progressive disease which affects the lives of millions of people including friends and family in the lives of an alcoholic.

Most alcoholics are in denial of their condition and therefore do not seek help while others wait until they hit "rock bottom" which usually involves a serious accident, injury, driving offense, or serious health related condition. If you or someone you loves suffers from this disease, it is important that you know there is help available and that alcoholism is a very treatable condition.

By getting treatment for yourself or loved one, you can avoid many serious problems related to alcohol dependency including relationship problems, health related conditions, and legal issues all caused by the abuse of alcohol.

There are many programs out there which are free of charge such "AA" or "Alcoholics Anonymous" which utilizes a twelve step program along with a support group and a sponsor for each individual.

For family and friends, "Al-Anon" is a support group which is available worldwide and helps with issues that family and friends face when dealing with an abuser of alcohol who is close to them. "Alateen" is part of "Al-Anon" and is a program specifically designed for teenagers who are dealing with a parent, friend or family member that is an alcoholic.

Your family physician or local clinic can also assist you with information in regards to treatment for either yourself or a friend or family member with an alcohol problem. There are also hotlines on a local as well as national level which can assist you in getting help by guiding you to the nearest place that offers a support group or treatment facility for alcoholism.

The most difficult part of getting treatment for a friend or family member is that most will not acknowledge there addiction and are unwilling to accept the fact that they have a problem which is one of the reasons why these support groups can be very helpful to you when it comes to dealing with this issue.
