Understanding Adult Alcohol Abuse and Dependence

By Anne Ahira

Alcohol abuse and dependence is a serious problem for millions of adults all over the world including the friends and family members who surround those that become addicted to it. Alcohol abuse is the consuming of alcoholic beverages in an unhealthy or dangerous manner such as drinking it on a daily basis or drinking it at excessive levels within a short period of time.

Alcohol abuse also frequently leads to alcohol dependence which is when an individual has an uncontrollable need or desire to consume alcoholic beverages and this dependence is a disease which is called alcoholism. Alcoholism not only affects the alcoholic but all the people around them who love them such as friends and family members who recognize that there is a problem even when the alcoholic is in denial.

There are generally many warning signs which indicate alcohol abuse or dependence such as an individuals inability to stop drinking or control the amount of alcohol they consume which can lead to such things as black outs serious injuries due to high levels of intoxication from the excess of alcohol in their system. Another red flag or warning sign is when a person ceases to engage in activities which they normally enjoyed doing because drinking alcohol has become more important to them.

An alcoholic will almost always feel as if they are in control of their drinking and will continue to drive or operate machinery even when they  are heavily under the influence of alcohol which in many cases leads to serious injury not only to the alcoholic themselves ,but in some cases to others around them as well.

Another significant sign of alcoholism is when a person tries to stop drinking or decrease their consumption and find that they are not able to.  These are some of the major signs of adult alcohol abuse or dependence.

If you feel you may have a drinking problem or know someone who does and want to get help there are many great organizations which are available to you free of cost such "AA" or "Alcoholics Anonymous" which can easily be found online or through your local telephone book.
