Acupuncture

In today's world, natural and ancient based medical treatments such as acupuncture are becoming more and more popular among those that desire a natural approach to optimizing their health.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical treatment that has increased in popularity among major regions in the world in the past thirty years, such as the United States. It consists of inserting needles that are relatively thin directly into skin. Naturally, there are specific locations throughout the body that are the main focus of this alternative based medical treatment.

The Belief behind the Treatment

In order to understand acupuncture as a whole, it is important to break it down to the belief system that the Chinese have pertaining to the treatment. The ancient Chinese believed that each and every single individual has a unique energy flow. This is often referred to as the "Life Force". It is also referred to by the Chinese as the "Qi", but has also been called the "Chi".

It is a known fact that any form of energy needs a means to flow. In the body, there are several areas that are believed to permit the actual flow of this energy. These areas are referred to as the "Meridians". These areas are considered to be "Paths". There are locations along these meridians that the Chinese believe, if manipulated, will contribute positively to the body's natural flow of energy.

The Modern Belief

Medical professionals, scientists, and other specialists have researched the ancient practice of acupuncture for many decades. For these individuals, the concepts of the "life force" and the flow of energy throughout the body were not enough to explain the effectiveness behind the alternative treatment strategy.

Over the course of the study pertaining to this treatment, it has been determined that the process apparently acts as a natural stimulation to the connective tissues of the body. In addition to this, the small needles also stimulate the muscles and the various nerves present at the insertion points.

When stimulated, the body's natural defense system that works to interfere with pain processing to the brain becomes active. In turn, the circulation of the body is greatly enhanced.

The Conditions Treated by Acupuncture

There are many medical conditions that have been found to benefit from the alternative treatment of acupuncture. The purpose and intent of this type of treatment is to eliminate pain associated with various conditions and injuries of the body.

However, there are many who have found that they do not experience other uncomfortable symptoms associated with conditions and injuries after participating in an acupuncture session.

These symptoms may include, but are not at all limited to; nausea, dizziness, vomiting, gastrointestinal upset, and others. The treatment may prove to be effective for the following:

  • Mild to Severe Cases of Fibromyalgia
  • Relief from Chemotherapy Side Effects
  • Mild to Severe Headaches including Migraines
  • Pain Associated with the Birthing Process
  • Cramping of the Muscles Due to Injury and the Menstrual Cycle
  • Various Symptoms Associated with Arthritis
  • Pain That is Related to the Back
  • Pain That is Dental Based
  • Complications Associated with Conditions such as "Tennis Elbow"

The Risks Associated with Acupuncture

If you are considering acupuncture, it is imperative that you understand that there may be certain risks associated with this alternative medical treatment. However, it has been established that most of the risks occur if the treatment is received from someone other than a certified professional.

The first risk that you should be aware of pertains to the actual needles. It is not appropriate to allow a needle that has been used on another individual to be inserted into your skin.  If "dirty" needles are used in the treatment, you stand the chance of contracting diseases that are considered to be infectious such as HIV and Hepatitis. When receiving treatment, always ensure that only new, "clean" needles are utilized.

There have been cases in which an individual has had their organs damaged due to the fact that the needles used were placed too deeply into the skin. This is a situation that is more likely to occur if the needles are used in close proximity to the lungs.

In addition to this, it is common for the recipient of the alternative treatment for healthy living to experience soreness in the areas where the acupuncture needles are inserted. These areas may bruise. In some instances, bleeding may be experienced as well.

If you are carrying a child, you have internal medical devices such as a pacemaker, or you have a disorder that is directly related to bleeding, you should avoid engaging in acupuncture. In the same respect, if you discover that you are on prescription medications or over-the-counter medications that work to thin the blood, you should not participate in acupuncture therapy.

The Procedure

If you are considering acupuncture, it is important that you gain an effective understanding of the procedure that will be performed. The points used by the specialist are actually located in many different areas of the body. You will be placed on a table or bed that is padded for your comfort and will be informed of the locations that will be stimulated.

There are anywhere from about five to twenty five needles that may be utilized during the course of your session. They are relatively thin, so discomfort is mild. Many feel no discomfort at all. Once the needle is inserted, the therapist may manipulate it ever so slightly in order to optimize the benefits you experience. In some cases, electrical currents or heated currents are added for optimal benefits.

As the procedure continues, the needles will remain in place for up to a half an hour. You will often be encouraged to remain still and relax. Once the treatment is finished, the needles will be inserted. You may find that pressure is relieved, but there is typically no pain involved in this step.

In many cases, you may discover that the troublesome symptoms that you have been working to eliminate are immediately relieved. However, many do not experience the full benefits of the treatment for a few weeks.

If, after a month or so, symptoms are not alleviated, acupuncture may not be a treatment that is effective for you. However, despite the fact that it is not for everyone, acupuncture continues to grow in popularity.
